The assembly of automobile bodywork panels (20) onto a tubular structure (10) consists of combining rough blocks with the tubular structure. The structure and the blocks are indexed on a machining unit and support shapes (30), in contact with the bodywork panels, machined in the blocks. The structure is led onto the panel assembly unit. The slabs are combined with the tubular structure by moulding them onto the structure. At least one support shape is preformed with a simple machined base, of the same shape, as that in a rough block carried by the structure. The panels are stuck on the machined supports.
