A retainer, designed to reduce erosion of sediment and sand from a shoreline, consists of an oval roll with a permeable protective shell (4) containing a compartmented envelope (1) which is also supple and permeable. It is injected with sediment and anchored to the ground by an outer layer of a geotextile material. The outer shell is made from sand stuck to nylon filaments which are fastened at regular intervals to a supple mesh made, e.g. from polyamide, polyester or polypropylene with a breaking strain of -18 kN/m. The geotextile material is anchored to the ground round the whole of the retainer.
