The musical data of a sound sequence are coded in the form of series of digital samples. The complementary data, in particular textual are coded to be displayed in synchronism with the unwinding of the sound sequence. The method consists in breaking down the complementary data into digitally coded elements and mixing the digitally coded elements with the binary samples as they appear in the music sequence, so as to generate a mixed sequence of samples comprising both the musical data and the complementary data. The invention is applicable in particular to sound sequences coded according to the MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) standard. The invention also concerns a display device for displaying the complementary data. It comprises in particular a microprocessor (5) and a display screen (13) and is connected in a MIDI musical installation by means of a common bus (2) on which the samples pass through.
