The washing machine has a cabinet (310, Figure 3), an outer tub (320, Figure 3) installed in the cabinet to receive washing water, a spin tub (330, Figure 3) mounted in the outer tub to receive articles, an apparatus (200) installed at a lower portion of the spin tub to upwardly impel the washing water, a pulsator (240) to guide the washing water impelled by the apparatus into a center portion of the spin tub and to generate a swirling flow in the spin tub, a motor (340, Figure 3) and a power transmission (345 and 350, Figure 3) to drive the apparatus and pulsator (240). The apparatus has a porous cap (230) member to allow the inward flow of washing water and an impeller (220) to upwardly impel the washing water. The impeller (220) is provided with a one-way bearing (229) inserted into its axis of rotation. The blades (242) located on the upper surface of the pulsator (240) serve to generate swirling flow, and the impelled flow exits the apparatus via aperture 249. The apparatus impels the washing water toward an upper portion of the spin tub during a washing operation generating a complicated turbulent flow in the spin tub and improving washing efficiency.
