PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve a safety relative to forgery by rendering a safety marking undistinguishable with eye, and detecting characteristics of liquid crystal material having a chiral phase in use of a detection device. SOLUTION: As protection means from forgery done by the use of a color copying machine, an optically variable element is employed as a safety marking 5 in an information carrier. Namely, the safety marking 5 is undistinguishable with eye with the consequence that decision on truth or falsehood is done by detecting characteristics of liquid crystal material having a chiral phase by a detection device including a filter turret 6. Such a safety marking is formed by applying directly liquid crystal material to a carrier material or the like, which has a chiral phase with the side surface of a long wave of a reflection zone in the range of 200-420 nm, or the side surface of a short wave of a reflection zone in the liquid crystal material having a chiral phase in the range of 700-3000 nm.
