PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately maintain idling speed control with a direct injection spark ignition engine actuated in a uniform mode or a stratified mode. ;SOLUTION: This idling speed control system is controlled to operate by either of a uniform air/fuel mode or a stratified air/fuel mode. When operating in the stratified air/fuel mode, idling speed of an engine 10 is controlled by controlling the air-fuel ratio of the engine with a valve unthrottled. When the engine is actuated in a stratified mode or with throttled, idling speed of the engine is controlled by both the control of the air-fuel ratio and the control of a throttle valve 62. When the engine is actuated in a uniform mode, idling speed of the engine is controlled by controlling both the control of the throttle valve 62 and the control of the ignition time.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1999,JPO
