PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the innoxious and easy to use cultural assets-protecting agent that is coated, sprayed or impregnated on the surfaces of the remains of an ancient structure or relics to give them water repellency and increased hardness to prevent them from weathering by admixing an alcohol as a solvent, water and an acid catalyst to a preferably metal alkoxide and subjecting them to hydrolysis. ;SOLUTION: A metal alkoxide of the formula: MOR, an alcohol as a solvent, water and an acid catalyst are mixed, preferably at a volume ratio of the alkoxide, the alcohol, water and the acid catalyst of 10/5/0/0-10/30/5/2 to effect hydrolysis. In the formula, M is preferably one or more metallic ions selected from Si, Al, Fe, Ti, Cu, Ca, Mg, Mn, Ba; R is preferably at least one of 1-4C alkyls. In a preferred embodiment, the solvent is a 1-4C alkyl alcohol and the acid catalyst is one or more of hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, dilute sulfuric acid and acetic acid.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1999,JPO
