PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject coating agent capable of forming a titanium oxide coating film excellent in film hardness, abrasion resistance and photocatalytic hydrophilizing actions and useful for a window glass, or the like, for vehicles and buildings by adding a very small amount of a specific silicon compound to an amorphous type titania precursor. ;SOLUTION: This coating agent contains (A) a precursor of an amorphous type titania [concretely, an organotitanium compound such as a titanium alkoxide, a chelate or an acetate or an inorganic titanium compound such as TiCl₄ or Ti(SO₄)₂] and (B) a silicon alkoxide (hydrolyzate) [e.g. a tetraalkoxysilane (hydrolyzate), an alkyl silicate (hydrolyzate) or a polysiloxane having ≤3,000 average molecular weight]. The coating agent preferably contains the component B in an amount of 0.1-10 mol.% based on the total amount of the components A and B and expressed in terms of the oxide.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1999,JPO
