PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a tetraazaporphyrin compound which is useful as a recording material for an optical recording medium having excellent light resistance and stock stability by reacting a substituted maleonitrile or a substituted 2,5- diiminopyrrol and a metal or a metal derivative. ;SOLUTION: An example of the tetraazaporphyrin compound is shown in formula I (Mt is a metal atom at a valence of 2-4 or the like with/without two H, O or halogen atoms; and R1 is H, a halogen, an alkyl, an alkylalkoxy, an alkoxy or an aryl). The substituted maleonitrile is shown in formula I (R is H, a halogen, an alkyl, an alkylalkoxy, an alkoxy or an aryl.) The substituted 2,5-diiminopyrrol is shown in formula III (the substituting sign is the same as that of formula II.) A transition metal, its halide or its carboxylic acid salt is used as the metal or the metal derivative. The reaction is carried out in an organic solvent (e.g. an alcohol) at 100-200°C.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1999,JPO
