PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically stop an internal combustion engine and automatically start it after stopping, which are not implemented in an automatic transmission vehicle so far and to prevent air pollution by providing a logic means which automatically stops the internal combustion engine (t) second later when the vehicle is in a brake operation state and the speed becomes 0 value. SOLUTION: In driving a vehicle, a logic means 11 of a control circuit 10 incorporates the outputs of a brake sensor 2, a vehicle speed sensor 4, and a restarting switch 1. When the vehicle becomes in a brake operation state and a stop state and it passes (t) seconds (for example, 1.5 seconds) after the vehicle speed becomes 0 value, a control signal is sent to an automatic shift control means 9, assuming that a driver operates a brake from the intention of the stop. The shift gear of a transmission 8 is set to in N position regardless of the position of the shift lever 3, a fuel cutoff valve 6 is closed, and a fuel supply is shut off so that the internal combustion engine is automatically stopped. After that, when the restart switch 1 is operated, a starting electric motor 7 is so as to start the internal combustion engine.
