PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the estimation accuracy of the motion vector of the object of a non rigid body system in image flow velocity estimation using an optical flow. ;SOLUTION: Moving two-dimensional images are inputted from an image input part 100 and stored in an image storage part 110 as time series images. An image analysis part 120 divides two-dimensional time series images stored in the image storage part 110 into some sub blocks and calculates spatial frequency components inside the respective sub blocks and the standard deviation of density values. A normalization coefficient calculation part 130 substitutes the two image feature amounts of the spatial frequency components of the images and the standard deviation of the density values obtained in the image analysis part 120 in a linear equation designed beforehand and calculates an optimum normalization coefficient α for the respective sub blocks. A velocity estimation part 140 estimates the velocity vector of the moving object by respective picture elements from the continuous two time series images by using an optical flow method and outputs the estimated velocity vector to an output part 150.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1999,JPO
