PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new catalyst capable of generating atomic oxygen by accelerating decomposition of sodium hypochlorite or the like, a method for generation of the atomic oxygen in use of the catalyst, and a method for decomposition, sterilization, etc., in use of the catalyst, and a method for decomposition, sterilization, etc., by using this method. ;SOLUTION: This catalyst is composed of a composite wherein a metal oxide such as an oxide of a transition metal or a composite oxide containing the transition metal is supported on a carbon support such as active carbon or carbon fiber. Under existence of this catalyst, an atomic oxygen containing decomposition of hypochlorite such as sodium hypochlorite or calcium hypochlorite is generated. By bringing the atomic oxygen generated by the method in contact with a material to be treated, a material to be decomposed contained in the material to be treated or stuck thereto, is oxidized.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1999,JPO
