In a skeining device for skeining wire (26) fed to a coil winding apparatus, a shuttle member (23;23A) loops the wire around front and rear retaining members (13,14) and the loops are then twisted to form the skein. The wire (26) is under greatest tension when being pulled from the rear retaining member (14) to the front retaining member (13) and so the shuttle member (23;23A) is driven at a slower speed during this part of the skeining operation. Also the shuttle member (23;23A) is reversible along its path to allow optimum positioning of the shuttle when twisting the skein and when the wire passes rapidly through the device during coil winding.
