PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high quality image display by making a wide view angle compatible with display uniformity inconspicuous in display abnormality. ;SOLUTION: This device is provided with a first oriented film 5a formed on an upper layer of each electrode and active element constituting a display pixel directly or through an insulation layer and a second oriented film 5b formed opposite to the first oriented film 5a, and is provided with one side substrate 7a, the other side substrate 7b stuck to one side substrate 7a at a minute gap and a liquid crystal layer held between opposite gap, and is constituted so that each electrode constituting the display pixel applies an electric field 9 substantially parallel to the facial direction of one side substrate 7a and the other side substrate 7b for the liquid crystal layer, and is connected to an external control means optionally controlling the electric field 9 according to a display pattern, and the device is provided with at least polarizing means 8a, 8b changing an optical characteristic of light emitted from the other side substrate 7b according to the oriented state of the liquid crystal layer by the applied electric field 9, and is constituted so that orientation control power is given to at least one side between the first oriented film 5a and second oriented film 5b by the irradiation of polarization.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1998,JPO
