PURPOSE: To provide a liquid crystal display element having excellent electrical characteristics and liquid crystal orientability by conducting development with an aq. soln. contg. a specific ratio of alkaline compd., orienting the liquid crystal oriented film of exposed parts in a reverse direction and removing a radiation sensitive resin compsn. ;CONSTITUTION: The radiation sensitive resin compsn. on the liquid crystal oriented film is irradiated with UV rays via a mask of prescribed patterns and is then developed by using an aq. soln. contg. 0.01 to 1.5wt.% alkaline compd. to remove the unnecessary parts and to form the patterns. The unnecessary parts are removed by air drying with compressed air or compressed nitrogen after development to partially protect the liquid crystal oriented film, by which the patterns are formed. The substrate which is partly protected with the liquid crystal oriented film is then subjected to a rubbing treatment in a reverse direction. The resulted substrate is washed with such a soln. which dissolves the radiation sensitive resin compsn. and does not dissolve the liquid crystal oriented film, by which only the radiation sensitive resin compsn. is removed.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1995,JPO
