PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a silver halide emulsion low in fog and high in sensitivity and good in storage stability (fog and sensitivity) against time lapse and superior in processing aptitude in an ultrahigh-speed automatic developing machine by adding a specified amount of a thiocyanic acid compound to control pBr in a process from the time at which flat silver halide grains have grown to the start of a desalting process. ;SOLUTION: The silver halide grains contained in the silver halide emulsion contains the flat silver halide grains in ≥50% of the total projection areas and having an aspect ratio of 3-15 and a corresponding circle diameter of ≥0.5 μm. The aspect ratio means the corresponding circle diameter of the principal face to the thickness of the silver halide grain. The thiocyanic acid compound is added into the silver halide emulsion in the conditions of pBr of 2.5-3.5 in the process from the time of the flat silver halide grains having grown to ≥90% of the completed flat grains to the start of the desalting process. The thiocyanic acid compound is added in an amount of 1×10-2-2×10-1 mol per 1 mol of silver halide and then, bromide ions are added to convert pBr into 0.5-1.5, and after that, the desalting process is started.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1999,JPO
