PURPOSE:To construct a model having image information being entirely equivalent to a drawing by reading in the drawing as digital image data, and thereafter, generating a data base item or a model element having a relative position on the drawing and image information on the drawing. CONSTITUTION:From an image input device 3, a design drawing, etc., on the paper surface are converted to digital image data and inputted or displayed on a computer 1 and a CRT 4. Subsequently, by utilizing an auxiliary input device such as a mouse, etc., a range to be recognized as a model element in a specific graphic or an area in the drawing is designated. As soon as the range is designated, a new model element or a data base item is generated in the computer 1, and position information of the designated range and a copy of image data within a range are stored as attribute information. In such a way, the inputted drawing data is converted to a software model constituted of plural elements in a state that it remains entirely equivalent to the original drawing on a screen.
