PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain high purity hydroxylamine and hydroxylammonium salt solns. by disposing a cation selective membrane and an anion selective membrane between a cathode and an anode to form an electrochemical cell and to define an isolated acid chamber, an isolated supply chamber and an isolated recovery chamber. ;SOLUTION: An electrochemical cell is which an anode 12, an anion selective membrane 13, a cation selective membrane 14 and a cathode 11 are disposed in this order contains an isolated acid chamber 15, an isolated supply chamber 16 and an isolated recovery chamber 17. A soln. contg. impure hydroxylamine and one or more hydroxylammonium salts is filled into the isolated supply chamber 16 and a liq. electrolyte is filled into the isolated acid chamber 15 and the isolated recovery chamber 17. When a potential difference is produced and maintained between the anode 12 and the cathode 11 to generate an electric current crossing the electrochemical cell 10, NH4+ is attracted toward the cathode 11, enters the isolated recovery chamber 17 through the membrane 14, bonds to OH- formed on the cathode 11 and forms the desired hydroxylamine.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1999,JPO
