PURPOSE:To offer the vertical fluorescence lighting device which enables a light source to be positioned corresponding to the kind of exciting light. CONSTITUTION:This fluorescence microscope has an objective 11 and an ocular 15 as an optical system for observing a sample 13. Further, this microscope has the light source 1 for the exciting light, a half-mirror 5, a collector lens 2, a lens 4, a lens 6, a lens 9, a dichroic mirror 10 which reflects the exciting light and transmits fluorescent light from a sample 13, and a focus plate 5 which is a visible-range dichroic filter movable along the optical axis as the vertical fluorescence lighting device. The focus plate 5 has its position determined for each kind of exciting light and when focusing is performed at each position, an image of the light source can be obtained even on the rear focal plane 12 of the objective 11 for each kind of exciting light.
