PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simultaneously and quickly determine p-cresol and indoles by simultaneously distilling the p-cresol and indoles by steam-distilling a solution prepared by dissolving a fecal matter by adding pure water and sodium carbonate solution to the fecal matter. ;SOLUTION: After a fecal matter sample is collected in a beaker, pure water is poured in the beaker to suspend the sample and the content of the beaker is transferred to a distillation flask. When the pH of the solution in the flask is adjusted to about 8 by adding several drops of a sodium carbonate solution, the determining speed which does not allow the formation of phenoxide and the distilling speed of p-cresol are improved. Then most of the sample is dissolved by adding a phosphoric acid buffer and sodium chloride and shaking the flask. When most of the sample is dissolved, the flask is set in a steam- distilling device and p-cresol and indoles are simultaneously distilled. Then a sample solution is prepared by mixing a p-isopropylphenol solution with the distilled p-cresol and indoles. When the sample solution is analyzed by gas chromatography, the p-cresol and indoles can be determined quickly and simultaneously.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1997,JPO
