PURPOSE: To provide a method and device for performing access to a customer meter, and controlling a customer station equipment through a telephone line. CONSTITUTION: Calling suppression signal connection is set through a customer line between a central station and a customer station equipment. This connection is set between a data access equipment 10 such as a meter reading controller and a customer station equipment such as a meter interface unit 30. Thus, a signal can be exchanged between the two equipments through this connection without calling a customer by a calling signal or changing the monitoring state of the customer station equipment from on-hook. The voice exchange network of the central station is used for forming the connection between the meter reading control unit and the meter interface unit 30. Thus, it is possible to perform access to a number of remote utility meters and controllers by using the existing telephone equipment.
