The bacterium is preferably desired to be able to grow using acetic acid as a substrate. Further, a bacterium having optimum pH for growth at 6.5, the optimum temperature at 37 deg.C, the optimum NaCl concentration of 0.25M, gram-positive and a salcina-like form, especially a bacterium of genus Methanosarcina NY-927 (FERM P-10975) is cited.
