PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a low-cost nonlinear optical material stably producing a high nonlinear optical effect and excellent also in safety by forming a thin film of a substance obtd. by adding at least one kind of specified alkali metal to at least one kind of specified metal oxide and combining them on a transparent substrate. ;SOLUTION: A thin film of a substrate obtd. by adding at least one kind of alkali metal to at least one kind of metal oxide and combining them is formed on a transparent substrate to obtain the objective cubic nonlinear optical material. The metal oxide is Y₂O₅, Cr₂O₃, Mn₃O₄, Fe₂O₃, Co₃O₄, CuO or NiO but V₂O₅ or NiO is preferably used. The alkali metal is, e.g. Li, Na, K, Rb or Cs but Li is preferably used. The substrate is made, e.g. of SiO₂-base glass, quartz or sapphire made chiefly of Al₂O₃.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1997,JPO
