PURPOSE:To execute the recognition processing at high speed by a simple method by recognizing a group of picture elements in X and Y two-dimensional planes, while scanning it in the Y direction between end points designated in the X direction. CONSTITUTION:A Y coordinate of an end point A is set as a scanning start line number in a Y register in a processor for executing recognition processing. Subsequently, an X coordinate of the end point A is set as a scanning start X coordinate in an X register. When a picture element exists in the end point A, the present line number and the X coordinate are saved. Next, after stepping the X coordinate, whether a picture element exists in a stepped new X coordinate position or not is decided. When the picture element exists in this scanning position, the X coordinate is saved and stepped. When the picture element does not exist in the present scanning position, the present scanning position is considered to be in the outside of a master line and X data in a start position and the end position of a slave line are saved as a node position. When the present line is not a final scanning line, the X coordinate is cleared and a scanning start point of a second line is set. When it is repeated and reaches an end point B, the processing is ended.
