NEW MATERIAL:A compound shown by formula I. USE:A synthetic intermediate for 4-fluoro-4'-hydroxybiphenyl. The compound shown by formula I is useful as a liquid crystal substance and a synthetic intermediate for medicines. PREPARATION:A p-fluorobenzene shown by formula II (X is Cl, Br or I) is made to react with a compound shown by formula III or a p-t- butoxyhalobenzene shown by formula IV, is reacted with a compound shown by formula V in the presence of a Pd catalyst containing phosphine as a ligand in the presence of a Pd catalyst at 10-100 deg.C to produce a compound shown by formula I. The Pd catalyst is shown by the formula PdX2 (phosphine) (X is Cl, Br or I) and PdCl2.dppe (dppe shows 1,2-bisdiphenylphosphinoethane) may be cited as the Pd catalyst. The amount of the catalyst used is about 0.1mol%.
