PURPOSE: To preserve each of aquatic animals such as fishes in a living state without using water by encapsulating the aquatic animals in a packaging container having an opening in its side part under a specified pressure, closing the opening with a silicone elastomer, adjusting the CO2 concn. inside the packaging container to a prescribed value or lower and maintaining the temp. inside the packaging container at 0 deg.C. CONSTITUTION: In this method, aquatic animals such as fishes, crustaceans or shellfishes are placed in a case which can be reduced in an inside pressure of 5 to 8 millibar while maintaining the partial pressure of water vapor inside the case at =4.5 millibar. Then, the pressure inside the case is restored to the atmospheric pressure and thereafter, the aquatic animals in the case are encapsulated in a packaging container having an opening in its side part and subsequently, the opening is closed with a silicone elastomer film which has an about 50μm thickness and a surface area sufficient to maintain the CO2 concn. inside the packaging container at =1% and thereafter, the temp. of all the contents of the packaging container are maintained at 0 deg.C. Thus, the aquatic animals such as fishes, crustaceans or shellfishes can be preserved each in a living state without immersing them in water.
