A method of preparing polymers containing hydroxamate functional groups, whereby methacrylic acid polymers are esterified in aqueous solution to give polymethacrylates. The resulting esterified polymers then react with a hydroxylamine to produce polymers containing hydroxamated methacrylic acid. Furthermore, there are disclosed water soluble polymers which are useful for carrying out said method, hydroxamate polymers produced by said method and a process for removing suspended Bayer process solids, using said hydroxamated polymer to paraflocular them.
