Valerian preparations and extracts, as well as isovaleramide, isovaleric acid and its pharmaceutically acceptable substituted salts, esters, and amides have clinically significant pharmacological properties that encompass treatment for a variety of pathological conditions, including spasticity and seizures, which are improved by provoking a slight depression of the CNS activity. The compositions in question are generally not cytotoxic and do not cause weakness or sedative activity at doses that are effective for the symptomatic treatment of such pathological conditions.
