A new catalyst comprises an alumina-based extruded support consisting of multiple juxtaposed agglomerates and optionally an oxide or sulphide of a metal selected form Cu, Mo, W, Fe, Ni or Co.The sum S of the metals is 0 - 70% wt.Each of the agglomerates is partly in the form of laminates and partly as needles : the latter are uniformly dispersed around and between the laminates. Also claimed are their preparation and use.
