The lighting unit is either placed on top of, or integrated into a computer monitor. The unit projects (241) from the front of the monitor and has a light source (24) directing suffused light over the surface in front of the monitor, e.g. keyboard. An indicator light (23) and cooling grate (22) are provided on the main body. The unit also has two side units (25,26) that can slide in and out of the main body (30). In the extended state, the units direct light onto the working surfaces at the side of the monitor. Gratings (27) both direct and diffuse the light that are manually controlled (21).
