The can capping method uses a film of thermoplastic material (9) which is heated and placed on the upper portion (11) of a group of cans (11). The film is made to adhere by mechanical means to the upper portion of the cans by application of vacuum, and is then separated form the rest of the film. Heat is then applied and the film adopts the shape of the can as it shrinks, whilst still maintaining the vacuum attachment to the top of the can. The film web (9) is unwound from an initial reel (8) and is wound as scrap onto a final reel (7) after cutters have removed the discs for the can tops, but the containers can be any shape. Group packs can be formed without interrupting the flow of the processing line by simply inserting the apparatus into the line.
