Process for the biological treatment of water based on a biofilm on a support of a specific design. The support comprises meshes or grids in such a way that the nodes of one do not coincide with those of the one closest to it and with a spacing of between 1 and 30 mm and preferably between 3 and 12 mm. The support is placed in a biofilm reactor in the form of an ordered fixed bed, a random filled bed formed of suspended particles. The process can be completed with a secondary settler which may incorporate the same type of support to improve settling. The process applies to the removal of carbonaceous organic material, ammoniacal nitrogen, nitrates and phosphorus from water through the use of anaerobic, anoxic and aerobic phenomena for which purpose the reactor includes aeration.
