METHOD FOR CONFIGURING AN INPUT/OUTPUT MODULE COUPLED TO A PROGRAMMABLE LOGIC CONTROLLER

A method is provided for configuring a smartmodule which is coupled to a programmable logiccontroller. The controller includes an initialconfiguration file which specifies an initialconfiguration for the smart module. After power upand initialization of the controller, the initialconfiguration file is transmitted from the controllerto the smart module. The initial configuration fileis now designated a current configuration file and thesmart module assumes the configuration specified bythe current configuration file. In accordance withthe method of the invention, module specificinformation which is stored in the module is thendisplayed to aid a user in configuring the module.The user can then modify the current configurationfile in response to the module specific informationwhich was displayed. This method significantlysimplifies the process of configuring smart modulesfor the user.
