An adsorbent for ink jet use arranged in aposition to be in contact with ink, having the highercapability of adsorption with respect to hydrophobicsubstance contained in ink than colorant therein.Then, an ink retaining container comprises an inkretaining portion for retaining ink to be supplied toan ink jet head, an ink supply opening which becomesthe ink supply portion from the ink retaining portionto the head, an atmospheric communication opening forcommunicating the ink retaining portion with the airoutside. This ink retaining container is provided withthe above-mentioned adsorption member arranged in aposition to be in contact with ink in it. With theadsorbent and the ink retaining container thusarranged, it is made possible to perform ink jetrecording with excellent print characteristics byeffectively removing the hydrophobic substance elutedform the ink absorbent in the ink retaining container.
