A brine for use during drilling operations comprises water as a continuous phase and a low molecular weight, water-soluble organic compound in an amount effective to reduce the crystallization point of the brine. The low molecular weight, water-soluble organic compound may be an alcohol, polyol, glycol, polyglycol, polyalkyleneoxide, alkyleneoxide copolymer, alkylene glycol ether, polyalkyleneoxide glycol ether, carbohydrate, amino acid, or amino sulphonate. The preferred compounds are ethylene glycol and tripropylene glycol bottoms.
