A method of testing the beta -thalassaemic status of a patient comprises procuring an erythrocyte extract containing (uridine monophosphate hydrolase) UMPH-1 and UMPH-2, assaying aliquots of the extract with a substrate for UMPH-1 and a substrate for UMPH-2, and comparing the assay results.
