The invention relates to a monopulse secondary radar system (SSR interrogator) wherein the imaginary part of DELTA / SIGMA is used for assessing the signal quality of the transponder reply. If the imaginary part of DELTA / SIGMA is greater than a predetermined threshold, this signifies that the quality of the received transponder signal is poor. In this case, the target angle calculated from the real part of DELTA / SIGMA is optionally rejected as incorrect and measures are taken to check whether there are two targets or more in the area in question.
