Disclosed are hair care compositions comprising: (a) an effective amount of an optical brightener having a molar extinct coefficient of at least about 28,000 of an absorption peak between a wavelength of about 1nm to about 420nm; and (b) a hair care active selected from the group consisting of a detersive surfactant, a conditioning agent, a fixative polymer, and mixtures thereof. Further disclosed are hair care compositions comprising: (a) an effective amount of an optical brightener having a molar extinct coefficient of at least about 28,000 of an absorption peak between a wavelength of about 1nm to about 420nm; (b) a scattering particle having an average particle size of at least about 0.03 mu m; and (c) a carrier. Still further disclosed are methods of protecting the hair from UV light by applying an optical brightener to the hair.
