HEALTH CARE SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR PHYSICIAN ORDER ENTRY

A physician order entry system and method provides cross-checking of prescribed medications against one or more databases to determine the propriety of administering a prescribed medication to a patient. The system allows entry of a prescription of medication. Once a prescription is entered for a patient, the system checks patient information and/or pharmaceutical information to determine whether the prescribed medication is appropriate. If appropriate, the prescription is forwarded to a pharmacy and filled. The medication is then delivered to the patient for administration. If it is determined that the prescription is inappropriate, a health care professional, such as for example the tending physician or pharmacist is notified of the concern.
