A thin profile laser pointer assembly (100) includes a thin profile laser head (102), a constant voltage laser diode driver circuit, and a coin cell power source (106) all packaged within a thin-profile rectangular housing (108) having a thickness between about 2.0 mm and about 6.0 mm. The laser head (102) includes a thin, rectangular heat sink (110) and a laser diode (112) mounted on a recessed shelf (126) on a front edge of the heat sink (110). The laser head (102) is slidably received in a mounting channel (160) in a front portion of the housing (108). The arrangement of the laser head (102) and mounting channel (160) rigidly fixes the laser diode (112) in the X and Z axes while permitting sliding linear movement of the laser diode (112) along a Y axis, which defines optical axes of the laser diode (112). The laser diode driver circuit and a contact switch are mounted on a circuit board (198) received and secured over the housing (108).
