Two concentric fluid pistons (7,8) act on the support (10) for the piece (1), the first piston (7) having a large travel. The second piston (8), with a reduced travel, is inserted between the support and the first piston. A fixed part (18) mating with a gear tooth prevents angular movement of the piece. The two pistons are supplied with fluid to advance them and restrain the piece by the support against the stop. The first piston is then locked by a part (12) relative to its cylinder. The supply of the second piston is then reversed in order to return it to the bottom of its travel and release the piece. The grinder (4) is introduced into the piece, rotated, and expanded to establish a predetermined torque between it and the piece, which is thus centred. The second piston supply is again reversed to return it to the bottom of its travel to restrain again the centred piece against the stop.
