Acoustic lobe pattern combination method for improving mapping quality

This invention relates to a method for electronically controlling an ultrasonic transducers phased array to scan a recognition area, the ultrasonic transducers being usable as emitters or receivers.;In particular, this inventive method controls the array so as to successively scan the same observation area by controlling a first configuration of transducers so as to emit a first emission acoustic lobe pattern (9,10,10',11) in order to obtain returned echo signals with a high resolution, and by controlling a second configuration of transducers which is different from the first one, so as to emit a second emission acoustic lobe pattern (14,15,15',16), and by combining the corresponding returned echo signals. The ambiguities which can be present in the returned echo signals from the first emission acoustic lobe pattern (9,10,10',11), are eliminated. The mapping quality can be thus improved.;The present invention is well adapted to robot guidance systems and sonar for vehicles.
