Method for reducing saline infiltration in coastal sewerage systems, wherein the level or hydrostatic pressure of sewage in a sewer which is subject to tidal influences and the level or hydrostatic pressure of the influencing tide are used for controlling valve means to regulate discharge of said sewage from said sewer such that the hydrostatic head of the influencing tide adjacent the sewer does not exceed the hydrostatic head of sewage in the sewer upstream of said valve means by more than a predetermined amount.
