Use of a macroinitiator with lateral peroxide functions in radical polymerizations in the presence of stable radicals for the production of graft polymers having pendant grafted polymer chains with controlled structure. Graft copolymers with a (co)polymer backbone carrying pendant grafted groups of formula (I) -O-PM1-(PM2)-T (I). PM1 = a polymer sequence from at least one radical (co)polymerizable monomer M1; PM2 = an optional polymer sequence from at least one radical (co)polymerizable monomer M2; T = the residue of a stable radical. Independent claims are included for: (a) a process for preparing the graft copolymers by polymerizing monomers M1 and optionally monomers M2 in the presence of a macroinitiator with lateral peroxide functions; and (b) use of the graft copolymers as compatibilizing agents, emulsifiers or adhesion primers. Use of the macroinitiator (IV) as backbone allows the production of graft copolymers with improved control over the number and length of the grafted polymeric pendant groups.
