Apparatus for freeze drying collagen from animal raw materials and other biomatrices, that have been obtained from polysaccharides and process for making these products

The collagen or biological material containing other polysaccharides is formed into rectangular plates (1), which may be from 5 to 40 mm thick. The plates stand vertically upright adjacent to heating elements (2), forming a sandwich of alternate collagen plates and heaters separated by small air gaps. The collagen plates may be frozen at a temperature of -30 degrees C, and may be placed in a vacuum chamber in perforated metal containers. The pressure in the vacuum chamber may be 0.5 to 3.0 mbar. The heaters may be at a temperature of -30 to +150 degrees C to encourage sublimation of the ice in the frozen collagen plates. Drying time may be 10 to 30 minutes.
