A method of applying a high aluminum, low cement castable refractory to the surface of a refractory tissue, comprising the steps of: (a) preparing a densely mixed castable refractory having the following composition in weight percent for application onto the surface of the refractory tissue: About 80 to 86% alumina aggregate, about 6% to 11% thermally reactive calcined alumina, about 4% to 8% calcium aluminate cement; (b) conveying said castable refractory through a delivery hose to a dispensing nozzle under pressure to apply said castable refractory; (c) adding about 0.05% to 0.15% of calcium chloride to the castable refractory by the nozzle before application at a constant rate by weight percent of the castable refractory applied to the dispensing nozzle.
