The process for the aldehyde hydroformylation of alkenes in the presence of a rhodium complex catalyst is improved by adding a novel bidentate ligand of formula;Formula 1;Where;R 1 , R 2 , R 1 ′ and R 2 ′ are organic radicals selected from alicyclic, aliphatic and aromatic groups, at least one of which is substituted with one or more electronegative residues;;The methylene group is present at the trans-2,3 position on the norbornane residue.;The present invention also provides a novel method for preparing bidentate ligands and novel intermediate phosphine oxides and phosphinic acid compounds.
