The present invention relates to a nickel / calcium oxide catalyst which can be used to prepare methyl isobutyl ketone from acetone and hydrogen in one step rather than the conventional three steps, and a method for producing the same. (A) preparing a mixed solution of nickel salts and calcium salts according to the present invention, (b) preparing a gel salt nickel-calcium salt catalyst precursor by evaporating the solvent by heating while stirring the mixed solution, and (c) a simple heat treatment of the catalyst precursor under an atmosphere of 80 to 400 ° C. air or an inert gas for 3 to 12 hours, and then reduction for 1 to 12 hours under a gas atmosphere in which an inert gas and hydrogen are mixed at 400 to 800 ° C. The nickel / calcium oxide catalyst prepared by the process shows much higher catalytic activity than other conventional catalysts in the reaction for producing methyl isobutyl ketone from acetone and hydrogen.
