Press plates for the production of decorative laminates from resin impregnated papers having alumina particles on the compressed surface are hafnium diboride, molybdenum diboride, tantalum diboride, titanium diboride, tungsten diboride, vanadium diboride, zirconium diboride. Or coated with a diboride selected from the mixture thereof, thereby making the press plate resistant to scratching. Preferred diborides are titanium and zirconium. The most preferred diboride is titanium. The color, gloss, and surface appearance of the laminate compressed with a press plate coated with titanium diboride are practically the same as the laminate compressed with a press plate prior to coating.
