A point-of-sale system consists of an infinitely adjustable optical scanning device for reading bar code symbols, and a terminal connected to and operated by the optical scanning device. The arm, which can be bent and computed, is operated to hold the scanning device at least instantaneously with respect to the working surface through which the symbol passes, which operation is performed at a selected position among the numerous orientation positions to be adjusted.;On the other hand, a cover is provided in the scanning device to prevent overloading the photodetector of the scanning device. In addition, one scan pattern is selected from among a plurality of scan patterns to make the display readable.
